Everything you need to know about competitive badminton in the US
Austin Badminton Academy serves as a high-performance launchpad for athletes by combining elite coaching with an Olympic-standard environment. Led by world-class mentors like 2024 U.S. National Team Head Coach Abhishek Ahlawat, the academy employs a rigorous six-tier training system that transitions players from foundational skills to elite competitive levels. By providing access to 20 professional-grade courts and high-intensity sparring sessions with international pros, the academy simulates the speed and pressure of the global circuit. This formula has proven remarkably successful, producing national champions and historic Paralympic silver medalists, firmly establishing Austin and Frisco as a cornerstone of the American badminton pipeline.
The badminton circuit in the USA is a tiered ecosystem that balances professional aspirations with a thriving grassroots community. At the elite level, the U.S. Open—a BWF World Tour Super 300 event—serves as the flagship professional tournament, drawing international stars and high-ranking global points. Domestically, USA Badminton (USAB) governs a structured series of Open Regional Championships (ORC) and Local Championships (OLC), which provide critical ranking points for junior and adult athletes aiming for the National Championships. Geographically, the circuit is heavily anchored in hubs like California, Texas, and the Northeast, where dedicated badminton academies have fueled a surge in participation. With the sport’s inclusion in collegiate programs and a growing network of private clubs, the American circuit is increasingly recognized as a vital developmental pathway for Pan American and Olympic-level talent.

USA Badminton (USAB) oversees all sanctioned junior and adult competitions.
Junior Nationals (100% ranking points), Open Regional (40–50%), Open Local (10–15%).
U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 divisions for junior tournament play.
Rolling 52-week period. Your best 4 tournament results determine your ranking.
Selection is via designated Selection Events — ranking alone does not guarantee a spot.
Students who are ready can represent and compete at international-level tournaments.
