Getting Started with Badminton: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Badminton is one of the fastest racket sports in the world, with shuttlecocks reaching speeds over 300 mph in professional play. But don't let that intimidate you - it's also one of the most accessible sports for beginners of all ages.
Choosing Your Equipment
Racket: For beginners, we recommend a lightweight racket (80-90g) with a flexible shaft. This gives you more control while you develop your technique. Avoid extremely cheap rackets as they can actually hinder your development.
Shuttlecocks: Nylon shuttlecocks are perfect for beginners - they're more durable and consistent than feather shuttles. As you advance, you'll transition to feather shuttlecocks for competitive play.
Shoes: Proper court shoes with non-marking soles are essential. Running shoes or casual sneakers don't provide the lateral support needed for badminton's quick side-to-side movements.
Basic Rules
Badminton is played to 21 points per game, best of three games. A rally begins with a serve and continues until the shuttlecock lands on the court, goes into the net, or is hit out of bounds. You can play singles (1v1) or doubles (2v2).
