5 Common Mistakes Beginners Make (And How to Fix Them)
After coaching hundreds of beginner players at Austin Badminton Academy, we've identified the most common mistakes that slow down progress.
1. Gripping the Racket Too Tightly
A death grip on your racket reduces wrist flexibility, which is essential for generating power and control. Hold the racket as if you're shaking someone's hand - firm but relaxed.
2. Standing Flat-Footed
Badminton requires constant movement. Stay on the balls of your feet in a ready position, with your knees slightly bent. This allows you to react quickly to your opponent's shots.
3. Using Only the Forehand
Many beginners avoid the backhand side entirely, running around shots to use their forehand. While the forehand is naturally stronger, developing your backhand is crucial for covering the full court.
4. Hitting Everything with Full Power
Control and placement win more rallies than raw power. Focus on where you're hitting rather than how hard. A well-placed drop shot is often more effective than a powerful smash.
5. Neglecting Footwork
Good footwork is the foundation of badminton. Without proper movement patterns, you'll always be off-balance when hitting. Our coaches emphasize footwork from the very first lesson.
